NRL fans slam football great Cameron Smith after he ‘BUTCHERED’ Channel 9’s spirited pre-match monologue ahead of the season opener between the Eels and Storm
Cameron Smith took a beating on social media after his attempt at a pre-match monologue fell through ahead of the NRL season opener.
Melbourne Storm big Smith was on pundit duty for Channel 9 before his team raised the curtain against the Parramatta Eels, and was given the task of getting on before the game started, which is much loved when he performs Phil Gould.
But viewers were less than impressed by Smith’s awkward effort as he struggled to read the autocue.
One particularly embarrassing moment occurred when Smith left the air dead as he struggled to calculate what he was being asked to say next.
“It’s all up to the teams now,” he says before pausing awkwardly and pointing at the camera. ‘Get ready, it’s going to be a great season. It’s all here live and free on Nine.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Smith’s pre-game push.
“Cam Smith just trashed the pumping promo there,” a fan posted online. ‘He’s not the biggest fan of his, but where’s Gus when you need him?’
Another said: ‘Oh well, just seeing that Cam Smith intro on Channel 9 Rugby League means I won’t be watching Rugby League on 9 this year. He seemed second class.
‘Cam Smith trying to get Phil Gould’s speech…in Gus’s words NO NO NO.’
