NRL delivers verdict on Latrell Mitchell suspension following white powder scandal that rocked Souths

  • Received a competition ban after photo went viral
  • Had done everything to be fit for the final match against the Roosters
  • Mitchell wanted to serve the suspension this year, not in 2025

Latrell Mitchell will serve a one-match suspension at the start of next season after the NRL officially rejected South Sydney’s claims he is fit enough to play in round 27.

The NRL confirmed on Friday morning that the Rabbitohs’ final match against the Sydney Roosters will not count towards Mitchell’s suspension as he is deemed unfit.

Mitchell has not played since injuring his foot against Penrith on July 4. The Rabbitohs announced last month that he would not play again this season.

“The NRL has informed South Sydney Rabbitohs that Latrell Mitchell will not serve his suspension in round 27,” an NRL spokesperson said.

‘Based on the information provided, the NRL is not satisfied that the player is fit and available to play in Round 27.’

“The NRL has asked the club for clarification and further information regarding the player’s fitness and availability to participate in the match, including a fitness test,” the spokesperson continued.

‘Despite several requests, this has not happened in time for us to make a proper and considered assessment of the player’s suitability to participate in tonight’s match.

‘The player will serve the one-match suspension once he is fit and available to play in the 2025 NRL season.’

After being given a one-match ban for a photo showing him with white powder, Souths insisted Mitchell be declared fit.

The Rabbitohs sought legal advice on the matter on Thursday after the NRL felt three separate doctors’ reports were not sufficient to convince the NRL.

The decision means the fullback will miss South Sydney’s first game of the 2025 season under returning coach Wayne Bennett, assuming he is fit.
