NRL: Anthony Griffin forced to RE-APPLY for his job at St George Illawarra

Anthony Griffin forced to REAPPLY for his job at St George Illawarra with NRL club beginning search to replace Dragons manager under fire

Anthony Griffin will have to reapply for his job if he wants to remain the head coach of St George Illawarra, according to reports.

A Dragons board meeting Tuesday discussed Griffin’s future and decided to look at potential replacements for the coach, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

St George Illawarra have made a good start to the 2023 campaign, but having finished 11th last year and 10th in 2021, the bosses plan to begin the search for potential replacements.

Griffin’s contract was extended before a ball was kicked last year, and now he has been informed of the club’s intention to assess his options and is ready to fight for a new deal, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The club have appeared in just three NRL final games since super-coach Wayne Bennett left in 2011. They have failed to play in finals in the last four seasons.

Former Dragons star Jason Ryles, who now works as an assistant coach with the Roosters, has been touted as a possible candidate.

However, St George Illawarra will have a fight on their hands to land Ryles, and the Melbourne Storm will also identify the 44-year-old as a potential successor to Craig Bellamy.

They will also be looking at 2016 top-place winner manager Shane Flanagan, who worked as Griffin’s assistant before leaving for Manly this year.
