Although the outage affects countries around the world, including Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada, most of the problems were reported in the US.
This is the second issue Reddit is investigating on the same day, with users reporting slow loading of the app and saying they were experiencing “intermittent glitches” at 11 a.m. EST.
Reddit said on X that the issue was reportedly resolved less than an hour later.
Reddit will be offline from approximately 2:00 PM EST on Thursday
DownDetector, which monitors online outages, showed that tens of thousands of people in the US complained they were experiencing problems with the app, but only about 200-300 people in other countries in Europe reported similar problems.
Reddit has reported an increased number of errors on its site since February 22, with at least three issues occurring since then.
The outage comes just before the company plans to take its platform public later this month in an effort to attract more advertisers as it relies solely on ad sales for revenue.
Reddit is aiming for a valuation of up to $6.5 billion and is targeting $31 to $34 per share. Business insider.
Other sites have suffered major outages in recent weeks, with Reddit’s system problems occurring just two days after Facebook, Instagram and Messenger crashed and less than 24 hours after LinkedIn went down.
AT&T also experienced an outage that lasted about six hours on February 22, leaving millions of people unable to call or text.
The outages have led some Americans to question the reliability of US servers and the timing of the outages as the US heads into the 2024 presidential election.
Social media users linked Meta’s outage to AT&T, claiming the companies were trying to “silence” them during the Super Tuesday primaries.
‘COMPLOT THEORY! FB just experienced an outage/outage on TUESDAY,” someone wrote on Facebook at the time.
“Some reports say that HACKERS are preparing – PRACTICING – for the upcoming elections, aka SUPER TUESDAYS… unconfirmed reports of course….” she added.
Meta did not confirm what caused the outage, only that it affected their internal servers and AT&T claimed that the outage was caused by human error in the cloud-based networking system.
