Nova radio star Jase Hawkins breaks down live on air ahead of flight to Gold Coast amid family tragedy: ‘Toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life’

Jase Hawkins was forced to hold back tears on Friday morning as he revealed he is flying to Queensland following a family tragedy.

Speaking to co-host Lauren Phillips on their Melbourne Nova 100 radio show, the 42-year-old revealed he will fly to the Gold Coast after work to scatter his parents’ ashes.

The media personality burst into tears as he recalled the deaths of his parents Paul and Janet, with his father passing away in 2021 and his mother in 2023.

“I’m going to the Gold Coast this weekend. We’re going to scatter my parents’ ashes,” Jase began.

Co-host Lauren, 37, asked: “How do you feel about it? We’ve talked about it. We’ve talked about it offline.

‘We’ve talked about it a few times online, but a lot offline.’

Jase told his colleague that it was extra difficult to follow his father’s funeral via Zoom in 2021, as he was stuck in Melbourne’s COVID lockdown.

“It’s funny, it’s only really hit me in the last two days,” he said, nearly crying.

‘Dad passed away during COVID. I never got to the funeral. I watched it on Zoom, which is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

“And I know that unfortunately a lot of other people have had to do that too. And I think it’s something that…” Jase abruptly interrupted with an apology as he began to crack.

Once he came to his senses, Jase explained to viewers that he was flying to the Gold Coast that same day to scatter his parents’ ashes in Miami Beach.

“My dad passed away during COVID. I never got to the funeral. I watched it on Zoom, which is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Jase said.

“We’re going to scatter both of their ashes this weekend in Miami Beach, where we used to vacation every year,” he said.

“So it’s going to be really cool. It’s going to bring back some great memories… The whole family, we’re all staying in the same place. So it’s going to feel a bit like schoolies week.”

Lauren replied cheerfully, “That’s what Dad would have wanted!”

Despite crying over the loss of his parents, Jase said he mainly wanted to have “fun” this weekend and enjoy the memories he wanted to share with his family.
