Jonjo Shelvey’s time at Nottingham Forest could soon be coming to an end, with reports suggesting the central midfielder is ‘on the verge of joining Turkish club Rizespor’.

Premier League clubs must submit their 25-man squads for the competition this Wednesday TelegraphThe 31-year-old is set to join the Super Lig club on loan for the remainder of the season.

That would mean a pause in his time at the club, with Shelvey joining from Newcastle earlier in January, completing a deal that will keep him at the City Ground until 2025.

His contract at St James’ Park expired at the end of the 2022-2023 season, with the former England midfielder failing to break into Eddie Howe’s side at the start of the season as he struggled to return reversing a soft tissue injury. only three performances before it was sold.

The former Liverpool midfielder also admitted that he begged Howe to let him leave the club, telling his former manager he wanted to move on and ‘make a fresh start’.

He went on to make eight appearances for Cooper’s side, but has not played for Forest since April.

It comes after reports suggested he was unhappy with Cooper’s decision to leave him out of Forest’s visit to Liverpool last season.

Shelvey was also told to ‘stay at home’ by the Garibaldi boss after Cooper was unimpressed with his attitude and training performance, with reports claiming the two were involved in a ‘heated conversation’.

The Forest manager subsequently denied claims that he had fallen out with the midfielder, stating that there were ‘no bad feelings between the pair’.

Mail Sport reported earlier this summer that Forest would listen to offers for a number of players, including Shelvey and Emmanuel Dennis, who was signed for £15 million in the summer of 2022.

Shelvey did not travel for their pre-season training camp in Spain and could now be on the verge of a move to Rizespor with the Turkish transfer window closing next Friday.

Rizespor is currently fifth in the Turkish Super Lig, but finished in seventeenth place last season.

Forest have been active in the transfer market this summer and have already increased their holdings in midfield in particular by signing Ibrahim Sangare from PSV Eindhoven for £30 million.

Sangare scored eight goals in 45 appearances in all competitions last year, with Forest fending off competition from other clubs to sign him.
