Nottingham Forest may learn this month whether they will regain any of the four points they lost for breaking spending rules.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are just one point above the relegation zone following their March penalty after they were found to have breached the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

Forest appealed the sentence and it is understood the hearing will begin the week of April 22.

Before that, Forest faces a potentially decisive match against Everton on April 21, which is one point above them after their own deduction.

Sean Dyche’s team, who were awarded a further two points after being handed six points for financial violations earlier this season, face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Before the 2-2 draw against Wolves on Saturday, Nuno had to deal with the uncertainty surrounding the relegation picture due to the points penalty.

He said: ‘It could damage the integrity of the competition, there’s no doubt about that.

‘It’s a mess because it’s appeal after appeal and we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen.

“It’s better for us if it’s resolved as quickly as possible and it’s better for the competition so that there’s no mess, confusion and uncertainty, because this is what we’re experiencing now: there’s so much happening, so much talking. appeal after appeal.”

There is uncertainty over when Everton’s appeal hearing will take place, with the Premier League stating that May 24 is the deadline for the case to be concluded.

Should the matter then be decided, Everton could hypothetically play the final game of the season against Arsenal on May 19, not knowing whether they will avoid the drop or stay.

Meanwhile, the EFL announced yesterday that they did not have the jurisdiction to record Leicester Championship points due to breaches of profit and sustainability rules while playing in the Premier League.

The Foxes had also sought an injunction against any sporting sanctions imposed against them this season.

Many have questioned the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules this season following Forest and Everton’s sanctions, with English clubs reportedly agreeing to a new financial model to keep costs under control.

Some have argued that the current regulations are not fit for purpose, with Premier League clubs apparently favoring a rotation system for selection fees.
