Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley: Callum Hudson-Odoi scores STUNNING equaliser on his Reds debut… before visitors have winner controversially ruled out
After feeling like they were cursed by refereeing decisions, Nottingham Forest found themselves on the right side of a tight decision from the referees that denied Burnley their first win of the season.
Burnley thought they had secured their first win of the season when Lyle Foster tapped in late from close range, only for the goal to be disallowed by Sander Berge for handball in the build-up – following a VAR check. Foster was later shown a straight red card for an elbow on Ryan Yates, sparking anti-Premier League chants from the Burnley fans.
Referee Rob Jones was on VAR duty at Old Trafford last month when Forest felt the officials had been given a raw deal, but this time it was Burnley who are said to have felt aggrieved.
In front of cricketing greats Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, Callum Hudson-Odoi’s stunning equalizer on his Forest debut saved a point for the home side after Zeki Amdouni had given the Clarets a first-half lead.
Forest’s record signing Ibrahim Sangare made his debut on a £32million transfer from PSV Eindhoven, while Callum Hudson-Odoi – another deadline day arrival – also started the match.

Although Vincent Kompany claimed otherwise, Burnley were clearly wasting time in the opening minutes. The match was only ten minutes old when goalkeeper James Trafford was shown a yellow card for delaying a restart, and Charlie Taylor took an age over throw-in.
Kompany protested to the fourth official, who made an uncomfortable impression in the initial phase. Taiwo Awoniyi’s shot was blocked by Ameen Al Dakhil and Hudson-Odoi’s 20-yard effort was saved after Awoniyi robbed Jordan Beyer.
Then Gibbs-White, who was lively for the first 20 minutes, shot into the penalty area but slipped at the crucial moment. Moments later, Orel Mangala’s cross was just cut out as Awoniyi lay in wait.
That was about the time Burnley took control. Once they got into the rhythm, Kompany’s men finally looked like the team that dominated the championship last season and Forest became increasingly anxious.
Amdouni’s low strike drew a fine save from Matt Turner after Josh Brownhill robbed Anthony Elanga and Koleosho then linked up with Gonzalo Montiel. Montiel will be remembered for the rest of his life for scoring the winning penalty in the World Cup Final shoot-out, but he did not enjoy his first 45 minutes here.
First, the Argentine defender was chased by Luca Koleosho and his next contribution was to pass the ball straight to Josh Cullen, whose cross slid across the goal.
Clearly rattled, Montiel went into the book for a late challenge on Brownhill, but even as they struggled, Forest should have taken the lead in the 37th minute. Sangare rose unnoticed in the six-yard box but nodded Gibbs-White’s corner wide.
Forest were punished four minutes later. The impressive Koleosho zoomed past Joe Worrall’s outside edge and although Lyle Foster miscued the ball, the ball broke 20 yards out to Amdouni and his left-foot volley found the bottom corner.

67 MIN: Montiel lasted just seven minutes in the second half before being dragged off and replaced by Nuno Tavares. Forest tried to regain the momentum but although they went forward there were no clear cut chances.
Mangala shot over the bar and saw another shot blocked, before Gibbs-White headed Sangare’s cross too high after Koleosho was caught in possession.
Yet Forest finally drew level thanks to a memorable moment in Hudson-Odoi’s career. Hudson-Odoi collected Awoniyi’s lay-off in the left corner of the penalty area, shifted the ball to his right foot and sent a curling effort off the post.
It briefly looked like Hudson-Odoi would be denied his debut goal by a close VAR check for offside against Awoniyi, but the goal stood. Forest boss Steve Cooper became increasingly irritated in the side and jumped around in frustration when Gibbs-White’s shot hit Cullen’s hand and no penalty was awarded.
It took a while for the game to get going, but it was now in full swing. Burnley brought on Sander Berge and Anass Zaroury for Zamdouni and Johann Gudmundsson and continued to look smooth in possession.
Cooper responded by removing Hudson-Odoi to make a debut for Divock Origi, while Ryan Yates arrived in midfield to replace Mangala.
Like Amdouni, Zaroury looked cheerful and angry with himself as he hit the traveling fans.
By then Forest looked the most likely winners but they were undone by a howler from Scott McKenna, who was confused by a hopeful ball forward. This allowed Berge to sneak past him and roll the ball to Foster, who steered home from close range.
However, the visitors’ joy turned to pain when referee Rob Jones was invited to look at the monitor and disallowed the goal due to a Berge handball. The decision was marginal as the ball only seemed to hit the Norwegian’s upper arm – but Forest didn’t care.
Sangare had a shaky debut, being saved by McKenna after lingering near his own goal, and Foster headed just wide.
There was still time for Burnley to claim a penalty after conceding a goal, and after another VAR check, Jones opted to show Foster a straight red card for an apparent elbow on Yates.
