Zeki Amdouni’s late strike sent Burnley into the third round of the Carabao Cup in a match that may be remembered as Brennan Johnson’s swansong at Nottingham Forest.

Amdouni slammed in from close range in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of a terrible game that neither side really deserved to win.

With Johnson battling for the last 20 minutes as Tottenham prepared for a bid for Forest’s £45 million-valued homegrown striker this week, Forest fans wondered if he had played his last game for the club. They cheered and chanted Johnson’s name as he replaced Cheikhou Kouyate.

The final two days of the transfer window will be very busy for Forest, who are set to finalize the signings of defenders Nuno Tavares and Murillo today/Thursday, along with midfielder Nicolas Dominguez.

More are expected to follow on Friday, with Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi setting firm targets, while Johnson is unlikely to be the only player to leave as Forest go through another summer reshuffle.

Burnley are also allowed to enter the market after sustaining three injuries that night, the most serious of which turned out to be defender Hjalmar Ekdal, who was taken off on a stretcher shortly before the hour mark after a lengthy delay.

Boss Vincent Kompany, who made ten changes, had to make his third forced substitution after seeing Vitinho and Aaron Ramsey also hit.

Forest made his debut ahead of World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel and Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos, while Anthony Elanga made his first start, but they all struggled to find rhythm in a desperately poor match.

Neither goalkeeper could make a serious save in a game riddled with mistakes, which both sides were eager to get rid of before refocusing on the Premier League.

Ryan Yates missed a glorious chance to put Forest ahead when he headed Elanga’s cross wide from six yards out.

And the home side paid when Amdouni, who had delivered an impressive cameo, threw himself into an unsteady defense to get past the static Matt Turner.
