Vandals who broke into the grave of the sister of a notorious crime boss may have tried to hold her body for ransom, sparking fears of a gang war.
The resting place of Meshlin Marrogi, the sister of feared underworld leader George Marrogi, at Preston General Cemetery in Melbourne’s north was burglarized last weekend in what appears to be an escalation of a feud with a rival gang.
Ms Marrogi died in 2021 aged 30 after being affected by Covid.
This has been told by several underworld and police sources The age it looked like those responsible had taken the coffin off a mausoleum wall and tried to leave with it, but couldn’t because the elevator to the ground floor wasn’t working.
They then broke open the coffin where it was sitting and allegedly removed items such as expensive jewelery before fleeing, leaving the body otherwise untouched.
Vandals targeted the grave of Meshlin ‘Mesh’ Marrogi (pictured) this weekend.
It is believed that the motivation for stealing the body may be related to an attempt to extort money from 34-year-old George Marrogi, to put pressure on the former motorcyclist, or simply to get revenge.
Marrogi is serving a 32-year sentence for the murder of rival drug dealer Kadir Ors whom he shot in broad daylight in Campellfield in 2016.
In 2019, he was also convicted of drug trafficking after founding the Notorious Crime Family and running a large-scale drug trade reportedly worth $1 billion from behind bars.
An underworld source told the paper that Marrogi has made many enemies inside and outside of prison, but attacking the body of a family member was unprecedented.
“No one has ever done anything like this… this is next level,” the source said.
Victoria police have not confirmed gang members were behind the desecration of the mausoleum, but say Ms Marrogi’s grave was the only target.
No suspects have yet been publicly identified and the investigation is ongoing.
Born in Syria, Ms Maroggi was hit by Covid in 2021 and buried in Preston General Cemetery
Devastated mourners flocked to the cemetery on Monday, The Herald Sun reported.
Among them was Ms Marrogi’s mother, Madlin Enwiya, who was seen hugging another woman as she burst into tears behind the cordoned off section of the mausoleum.
The bereaved mother said she regularly visits her daughter’s grave – even more than once a day.
Another family member labeled the vandalism “sick” and urged police to find the perpetrators.
A Victoria Police Public Order Response Team vehicle was at the cemetery on Monday.
Meshlin is credited with playing a key role in the rise of her brother’s underworld empire.
Police are investigating whether the desecration of her grave was a deliberate attack on her brother Geroge Marrogi (pictured)
Police allege that her personality and knack for business led her brother’s empire to diversify into a wide variety of business interests.
NCF was initially involved in fundraising efforts for children in the family’s Syrian village, but investigators allege it was involved in creating a network of affiliates used to launder NCF profits.
Conflict between Middle Eastern organized crime gangs in Victoria has escalated in recent months.
A series of firebombings, arson attacks and flares have been carried out in Melbourne, with police hoping to stop the non-fatal attacks on property before tensions run high.
In the period before the wave of arson, there had been a wave of arson committed in tobacconists.
At least 11 firebombing incidents are believed to be related to the ongoing gang war.
A forensic team has examined the mausoleum at Preston General Cemetary and police are looking for CCTV footage in and around the cemetery.
