Rio Ferdinand has criticized French referee Clement Turpin’s first-half performance for his performance in Bayern Munich’s quarter-final against Manchester City.

Turpin was late for kick-off and then dealt a first red card to Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, which was then withdrawn as Erling Haaland was offside, showing five yellow cards and awarding the visitors a missed penalty.

Ferdinand was furious at some of the referee’s decisions, claiming he made the enthralling European encounter “about him” rather than the match.

“I didn’t like the referee today, not my thing,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He wants it to be more about him than the game,” he added.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich attempted to overcome a three-goal deficit in the first leg against the Premier League champions in their pursuit of a maiden European title.

The German side started well, but saw their momentum regularly interrupted by Turpin stopping play due to numerous fouls, but conceding just two minutes of stoppage time.

Turpin was part of an all-French official line-up for Wednesday’s knockout stages, with Nicolas Danot, Benjamin Pages and Jeremie Pignard leading the lines and manning the dugout.

The 40-year-old chief in charge is not used to big European competitions, having refereed last year’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool and previously officiated Manchester United’s 2021 European Cup final .
