Northern beaches crash: Tragic crash victim, 16, who died in horror crash, identified after five other teenagers pulled from twisted wreckage – as pals leave heartbreaking messages at crash site

A teenager who died when he crashed into a tree on Sydney’s northern beaches while he was a passenger has been identified while five others remain in hospital.

Cohen Griggs-Bufton, 16, a popular student at Narrabeen Sports High School, died in hospital after the crash at 12.20pm on Saturday along Cabbage Tree Rd in Bayview.

He was in the passenger seat, while four other boys, aged 16 and 17, were in the back seat, who were taken to the Royal North Shore Hospital by paramedics.

Police said the 17-year-old driver with a red P plate was airlifted to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The condition of the remaining boys with their injuries ranging from light to serious is not known.

Cohen Griggs-Bufton was tragically killed when the road he was traveling on hit a tree on Sydney’s northern beaches.

The crash site on Saturday was strewn with flowers along with two skateboards in a makeshift memorial left at the base of the tree.

Messages of love and grief were written on the back of the skateboards, including one that read: “Love you mate, take it easy.”

Cohen’s mother, Lindy Briggs, said Nine News her son will miss her dearly.

“He was a ‘wonderful young man who was just staying to enjoy his adult life,'” she said.

“The whole family will try to do all the things Cohen will miss, Love you Cohen.”

A local who called triple-zero described hearing two loud bangs and then when they went to investigate they found the wreckage and two boys clinging to the side of the road ‘withered’.

Investigators will look into whether alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor in the crash or whether the driver, who has not yet been interviewed, simply overshot a curve just before the tree.

The tree was previously the site of another fatal crash in 2003 with locals saying speed bumps should be built before the sharp bend.

“It was a chaotic scene … it appears two of the occupants had been ejected from the vehicle,” Northern Beaches Police Commander Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said.

Superintendent Sharkey said the boys suffered ‘serious’ injuries, including leg fractures and other related injuries.

“They were all young males from the Northern Beaches,” he said.

The scene is still under investigation and has just been cleared, so it’s too early.

Superintendent Sharkey said there was a limit of five people in the car.

“There is a sixth person in the vehicle, so where those people were, if they were in the cabin, that will be the subject of the investigation,” he said.

“It rained last night, the roads may have been wet.”
