A North Carolina teacher has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Brittany Calloway Hemric, 32, was suspended from Wilkes County High School after being charged on Jan. 1, 2021, with one misdemeanor count of taking indecent liberties with a student.
The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office said emergency responders received a report about the social studies teacher on Jan. 4. They did not release the age of the student, who has since graduated and is legally male. Wilkes Journal Patriot.
Calloway Hemric is a resident of Hamptonville, a rural community in the northern part of the state, and has worked as a classroom teacher at the school since 2018.
Wilkes County High School, which caters for grades nine to 12 (or ages 14 to 18), confirmed she was suspended the day after the report was made to police.

Calloway Hemric has worked as a classroom teacher at Wilkes County High School since August 2018, but the school suspended her on Jan. 5 after the allegation came to light.
“Brittany Hemric was employed by Wilkes County Schools in August 2018. She was a classroom teacher at Wilkes Central High School,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“Wilkes County Schools has been working closely with law enforcement in investigating the alleged conduct of the employee in question.
“That employee was suspended under applicable North Carolina law on January 5, 2024.
“We will continue to assist law enforcement and other authorities in the investigation of this matter and will take further action as warranted by the results of this investigation and the disposition of the pending criminal charges.”
Calloway Hemric, a white woman with dark brown hair and brown eyes, appeared expressionless in her mugshot.
She was released on a $10,000 bond prior to a hearing in Wilkes District Court on March 20.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
