The school’s principal, Wenitra Merritt, said in a statement to parents: ‘The conduct charged is related to an incident that occurred on our campus involving one of our students.

‘I want to assure you that we take the safety of our students and employees very seriously. Although privacy legislation prevents me from providing much additional information about the situation, I can announce that Ms Holland has been suspended.’

The teacher has denied any wrongdoing and said she actually tried to help the child back up after he fell to the floor.

She said WRAL: ‘Even the teacher’s assistant who walked behind me said I didn’t hurt him. I would never hit the child.

β€œThat’s why I became a special education teacher – to protect these kids from teachers who are actually abusing them.”

Holland said the male student was walking slowly, so he took his hand and began walking her down the hallway before throwing himself to the ground β€” which he “has been known to do,” she said.

She said she believes a parent called the school and reported the incident.

According to CBS 17 crew members who went to interview her, Holland started yelling profanities at them after they crossed the street.

Standing on her porch, she shouted at reporters, “I didn’t do a damn thing!”

When they ask if she wants to talk to them, she bellows, “No!”

Holland was hired by the school district in 2012 and is currently suspended with pay.

In North Carolina, it is the school board that can fire a teacher.
