NordVPN is launching a free malicious file checking service that anyone can use. Download it now to keep you safe online

The makers of one of the best VPNs have revealed one new control instrument to protect you when downloading files from the Internet.

Although it is not traditional antivirus programNord’s new File Checker is a service that anyone can use for free to check if a file contains it malware or other malicious content.

Users can simply upload a suspicious file to the checker, and NordLabs will do the hard work of checking if the file poses a threat.

Security and privacy

“Hackers have long proven their talent at disguising malware with legitimate-looking files. But the rise of artificial intelligence and the development of large language models have allowed cybercriminals to build and spread malware more quickly and easily. But as hackers become more resourceful, so does the cybersecurity industry. Tools like File Checker can help users stay safe online,” said Vykintas Maknickas, head of product strategy at NordVPN.

To ensure both privacy and security, the file does not leave the user’s computer while it is being checked. Instead, File Checker calculates the hash of the files in the browser before passing it on to NordLabs. Once it arrives, the hash is checked against a database of known malicious files that has been organized using complex machine learning and AI technologies to deliver highly accurate results.

If a file is suspected to contain something malicious, the tool warns the user that he may have something dangerous on his hands. NordLabs has also unveiled a range of other experimental safety products such as link control and a browser extension for AI phishing assistants.
