NordPass adds passwordless online authentication

Top password manager NordPass adds new upgrades to enable passwordless encryption solutions.

The company claims that customers will soon be able to store passkeys – the new technology with improved identity theft protection instead of passwords – that will protect their accounts on other websites.

In addition, NordPass users can access their saved passwords without a master password, but instead using biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition data.

Passwords in, passwords out

Passkeys replace passwords with encrypted keys stored on the device. When creating a passkey for an online account, a signature is generated on that device to verify that it is genuine. Although they are stored on the device, you can use other devices to access your password-protected accounts by responding to authentication prompts between the two devices, similar to how multi-factor authentication works.

Popular websites like eBay and PayPal already have passkey support for their customers’ accounts, and Google supports using them in the popular Chrome browser and on Android devices, though there are a few reserved to set this up. Microsoft also supports them in Windows 11, but not 10. Apple was one of the first adopters of Passkey technology and it is supported on all of their current devices.

Other new NordPass features for 2023 include the ability to view an account’s password history so you can recover older passwords and attach and save files to the manager.

It has also introduced a Time-based One Time Password (TOTP) feature that allows users to add an extra layer of security by generating a passcode that must be entered within 30 seconds of logging in.

Speaking of security, NordPass also assures that their technology has been “independently audited and we use the XChaCha20 algorithm to encrypt our consumers’ data.”

NordPass also announced that it is also working on further passwordless features designed specifically for businesses this year.
