Non-binary And Just Like That star Sara Ramirez waves transgender flag at Queers for Palestine rally in Brooklyn

And Just Like That star Sara Ramirez was spotted carrying a trans rights flag as they joined thousands of protesters at a “free Palestine” rally in Brooklyn on Saturday.

The 48-year-old non-binary actor wore a keffiyeh – a monochrome patterned scarf, a patriotic symbol of Palestinian identity – with a black North Face jacket, black cap and dark sunglasses as they marched through the Bay Ridge neighborhood.

The use of LGBT paraphernalia in pro-Palestinian protests has baffled many, as the Islamic State in the Middle East follows Sharia law, and as noted by Amnesty International, it is not safe for the gay community.

Others see the struggle for queer rights and anti-colonialism as intertwined because anti-gay laws were introduced first. introduced into Palestine by Britain in 1885 – although former colonial powers have since abolished such legislation in their own countries.

Ramirez posted an Instagram story about the protest on Saturday, during which the crowd chanted the age-old rallying cry: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” while the protester at the front carried a sign demanding a “ceasefire ‘.

Qween Jean also shared footage of herself leading the chant before turning to surrounding protesters, including Ramirez.

During a march in London on the same day, an LGBT flag resembling a group carrying the Palestinian flag was taken down, causing a conflict.

Palestine is not an LGBT-friendly nation. A Amnesty Report Last year it highlighted how ‘authorities failed to prevent and investigate homophobic and transphobic threats and attacks’ in the country.

Outlining an example of homophobia in the country, the report says: ‘On July 9 (2022), security forces watched as a gang beat youths and children taking part in a parade organized by the Ashtar Theater in Ramallah, flying rainbow flags.

“The attack came amid a wave of incitement to violence and hate speech against LGBTI people and feminists, which authorities have failed to investigate.”

Gay rights activist and Israeli writer Lior Halabi recently called out what he described as the “hypocrisy” of supporting both causes, writing in America’s oldest LGBT newspaper, the Washington Magazine.

“Despite the bleak situation for gay Palestinians who face legal and social abuse and even murder by Hamas in Gaza and the West Bank, some American left-wing and LGBTQ groups bizarrely still support the Free Palestine group,” Halabi wrote .

“This group calls for the destruction of Israel, but allows the abuse of its own LGBTQ people.”

The Bay Ridge protest in western Brooklyn started peacefully all day, but clashes broke out between demonstrators and NYPD officers as night fell, their numbers growing to an estimated 5,000 over the course of the day.

‘Say it loud, say it clear, we don’t want Zionists here!’ Protesters were heard shouting from the gathering, which largely restricted police presence around 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue.

‘We will liberate Palestine within our lifetime!’ Others shouted, touting signs that read: “We stand with Palestine” and “Once upon a time… There was humanity,” along with other similar sentiments.

Some Jews were even seen at the planned protest, with one telling ABC News that “as a Jewish person” she “(didn’t) want the Jewish religion to be the reason for this occupation.”

Another added why she was there: ‘(All we ask is) just treat the Palestinians as human beings. They deserve every human right, just like all other citizens. Just treat a person like a human being.

“That’s all we ask.”

The protest was preceded by another protest in Manhattan on Friday, where some 139 pro-Palestinians were handcuffed for blocking traffic in Midtown – by a group organized by the Democratic Socialists of America.

As the protest reached its peak on Saturday evening, an Israeli plane struck a site beneath a mosque in the occupied West Bank – a site the country’s military said was being used by terrorists to stage attacks.

Palestinian medics have confirmed that at least one person has been killed, as Israel continues to shell the region following Hamas-led attacks earlier this week that killed at least 1,400 Israelis.
