No show has more fun than Chucky

TV is off to a strong start in 2024. Shogun is truly fantastic, and the kind of weekly water cooler show we’ve been missing as a culture in a post-Game of Thrones world. Wonderful in the dungeon stole my heart and my stomach. TV adaptations of Mr and Mrs Smith, The gentlemen, And The three-body problem were all significantly better than I expected. And in the world of cape fiction, Invincible has continued its strong run and the X-Men are back! Despite all that, the television year has only just begun. There are plenty of exciting shows around the corner, such as Park Chan-wook’s The sympathizerPrime Videos Fallout show, and new seasons of Evil, Taskmaster, interview with the vampireAnd Doctor who.

But reader, I’d be lying to you if I said there was a show I was looking forward to more than its return Chucky. Created by Don Mancini, the mastermind of the Child’s Play franchise, the show has carried the mantle of killer puppet films in the best way possible. It’s deliriously funny, cartoonishly gory, winkingly over-the-top (Jennifer Tilly deserves many, many Emmys), and unafraid to delve into the deep recesses of its own canon. And despite its complete dedication to campy excellence, Chucky remains criminally under-monitored by my friends and colleagues. I beg you to put this right and join me in the cult of Chucky.

  • An intervention for Jennifer Tilly turned into a murder mystery fest with real murder
  • The three seasons are set respectively in a small New Jersey town, a Catholic reform school, and the White House (because it is canonically the most evil house in America).

The back half of the season promises even more bloody antics, with a blood-soaked White House, John Waters with a gun, what looks like the explosion of an atomic bomb (Oppen-who???), and definitely another Devon Sawa murder on the way. My sincere hope is that it has changed you too Chucky fidelity.
