US President Joe Biden on Saturday condemned the life-threatening attack on his Republican rival and predecessor Donald Trump, saying there is no place for this kind of violence in America.

Biden spoke to reporters at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and said he had tried to reach out to Trump, who is now in doctor’s care and appears to be doing well.

Trump was injured during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after a series of gunshots. He was immediately escorted from the venue by the U.S. Secret Service.

According to law enforcement officials, the Secret Service shot and killed the suspected gunman at the polling site. One person died in the incident.

According to CNN, law enforcement is treating the incident as an attempted murder. It is not immediately clear what type of weapon the shooter used.

There is no place in America for this kind of violence, Biden said. It is sick and one of the reasons we have to unite this country. We cannot allow this to happen. We cannot be this way, we cannot condone this.

“I hope I can talk to him soon, when I get back on the phone,” he said. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.

Blood was visible on Trump’s face and ear as he reached his right hand toward his neck. Multiple media outlets reported that multiple gunshots were heard as Trump addressed the rally.

Both the Secret Service and Trump’s spokesman have said the former US president is doing well.

He is doing well and is being evaluated at a local medical facility, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign announced it would pull all TV ads as soon as possible. The Biden campaign was in the midst of a $50 million advertising campaign this month, running ads in all the key states it controls.

Incumbent President Biden will face Trump in the November presidential election.
