Halloween is just over a month away, but Hulu’s latest movie aims to scare you before the spooky season officially arrives.
No one will save you is one of several new Hulu films hitting the shelves in September 2023, but based on its critical acclaim, it seems like few new films will be able to match its terrifying power in the near future.
The sci-fi horror thriller stars Kaitlyn Dever as Brynn, a woman who is an outcast in her own community for spoiler-filled reasons we won’t go into here. Brynn isn’t too concerned about being a social pariah either – well, until aliens invade her hometown, indoctrinate the locals using their mind control skills, and force Brynn to fight for her survival and freedom.
Watch the official trailer below to see just how disturbing it is No one will save you actually looks like:
If you’re not entirely enamored with what’s on offer – at least based on the two-minute teaser above – maybe No one will save you‘s incredibly positive critical reception will change your mind.
At the time of writing (September 22, the film’s launch date), No one will save you has a perfect critic score of 100% on the review aggregator website Rotten tomatoes. Granted, that’s only based on eight reviews – and of that group, Ready Steady Cut is perhaps the best-known selling point. Still, it’s rare for a sci-fi horror thriller to burst out of the gate and receive universally positive reviews, no matter how few are currently on Rotten Tomatoes – although we’re seeing more and more positive reviews across the internet. already.
What do some of the world’s most popular entertainment websites think? It seems like most of their reviewers also enjoyed the offering. Ian Sandwell of Digital Spy gave it four out of five stars and compared it to another excellent Hulu film – 2022’s Predator precursor Prey – calling it “so effective and innovative in its approach to a classic home invasion thriller that it is a must-see film”.
Review ‘No One Will Save You’: It’s Alien vs. Dever in Hulu’s clever and nearly wordless invasion thriller https://t.co/qhusUXOfMYSeptember 22, 2023
Andrew Webster of The Verge called it a “tight, minimalist sci-fi horror”, while Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter praised Dever’s powerful performance, writing that she delivers a “virtuoso turn in (this) intense alien home invasion thriller”. Samantha Coley from Collider was equally effusive, saying “(director) Brian Duffield’s thought-provoking creature feature promises to be a favorite among fans of both genres”.
1/3 Hush + 1/3 Fire in the Sky + 1/3 unique @BrianDuffield madness = No One Will Save You, a fantastic sci-fi/horror thriller that will keep you guessing. and shout. and occasionally cringing at icky things. really nice video. pic.twitter.com/iaRwchNUxqSeptember 22, 2023
There is an odd review that suggests No one will save you is not absolutely perfect. Marya Gates of IGN claimed that it tries to do too much, adding that it “ultimately becomes clumsy when it becomes both a convoluted action movie and an ill-considered parable about overcoming grief and guilt”. Matt Donato of Paste Magazine agreed with that sentiment, adding that the film “struggles to combine the film’s confident message with subplot themes surrounding a tragedy that befell Brynn’s youth.”
Overall though No one will save you it sounds like it will scratch that awkward, horror-infused itch as we slowly inch our way into the most chilling time of the year. And don’t worry, international viewers – No one will save you is also available outside the US on Disney Plus, so you don’t miss one of the best horror films of 2023 on one of the world’s best streaming services.
