This preview of Bikeriders comes from the European Film Awards at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival. The film will be released in December.
Elvis Presley’s ambitious film career was infamously destined to become the next James Dean. Ironically, it so happened that Austin Butler, who was nominated for the best picture Oscar in 2022, played Elvis ElvisIn his next role, he should aim directly at the kind of cooking that is still suspended, the ineffably cool and devastating role of decorum that James Dean defined in the 1950s and designed as a bullseye. It’s absolutely ridiculous how good it looks Bikeriders.
The motorcycle-gang drama film, set in the 1960s, stars Butler as Benny, a laconic yet hot-headed member of the Chicago biker club, the Vandals. As Benny, Butler rocked his slick blonde hair and scruffy goatee. He is decked out in many layers, often sleeveless in denim and leather, and wears rings on most of his fingers. he smokes He plays in the pool. It depends a lot on things. He is a man of few words who usually mooches languidly around the stage, or stares into the middle distance with sad ardour. But sometimes it breaks out.
And of course a huge roaring chopper rides in. (See to see Bikeriders (you can find it in the biggest theater if you want to feel every bark and rattle from the bikes, and every sloppy pin of the Shangri-Las drop in your ribcage.) He has a signature move where he rides his bike with his hand in a sloppy manner. cold, you smell, yes;
Here is yet another one used bike thing. This shot is actually a direct testimony from the 1968 photojournalism book, which is also called Bikeriderson which the film is based. Director Jeff Nichols (Silt, Media Special!) first saw the book 20 years ago and had long thought about adapting its themes of masculinity and identity, but also because it seemed so cool. So he makes his own story. So does Augustine Butler.
Bikeriders it is familiar; Goodfellas-as a story of working class, outsiders in mid-century America searching for brotherhood and sense of belonging, only to be consumed by corruption and violence. But Butler is not our chatty, fast-talking leader of this world, like Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill. He is quiet in the middle of the movie. The voice-over chatter that drives the story comes from Kathy’s wife, who (with a wild Chicago accent) is played by Jodie Comer.
Close to Comer, heavy lifting, capital-A agent Bikeriders Tom Hardy stars as Johnny’s gang boss. That robust, quizzical, menacing yet soulful, husky voice is what he does so well. Johnny loves Benny in a way that is both touching and a little scary. In their scenes together, Butler just stands in silence and savors Hardy’s intensity. It must be too passive and mutual, but rather magnetic, because of Butler’s presence, but energy, ardor of the eye, and; Oh my god just look at that hair.
Butler leads the least of the film’s triumvirate, and his character is very simple, so much so that he is more of an icon than a real person. But it doesn’t matter. Yes Elvis left in all doubt; Bikeriders He signs: This man is a movie star, and this movie-star is a performance. He never looks less than amazing, and his sheer magnetism pulls the rest of the film into his orbit.
Bikeriders It’s a movie of old, simple pleasures: great songs, perfect costumes, great storytelling, and a great cast of actors.
