No cupcakes, no cosmos: ‘Sex and the City’ brownstone in NYC will get a gate to deter tourists
NEW YORK– Thinking about roasting Carrie Bradshaw with a Cosmo as she poses on the stoop of her iconic Manhattan Brownstone from ‘Sex and the City’?
Think again.
The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday approved an application for a gate after Barbara Lorber, owner of the building since 1978, complained about “the endless presence of interest in my famous staircase.” The stately three-story building in Greenwich Village’s historic district was used for exterior shots of the apartment of Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker.
“I had literally hoped for decades that this would pass,” Lorber told the committee during heartfelt testimony. “But right now, I think even someone as stubborn as me has to admit that this isn’t going away in the near future.”
The sidewalk is cordoned off with a ‘no entry’ sign. But a neighbor told the committee the chain has failed to deter fans of the show who are causing a nuisance.
Eight committee members unanimously approved the application, which is a necessary step in the West Village historic district. Lorber’s architect will work with the committee staff on a final gate design.
“Sex and the City” followed the exploits and relationships of Bradshaw and her three friends for six seasons beginning in 1998. The show spawned two films and the sequel series “And Just Like That…”
Anthony Gillbee of Melbourne, Australia, had a photo taken with his teenage son on the sidewalk in front of the brownstone on Wednesday to send to his wife. He said he understood it would be annoying to have people standing in front of your house all the time.
“But you know, it’s an iconic location,” he said. “And if you put a port on the front, the whole look of it changes. And so it wouldn’t be Carrie Bradshaw’s house anymore.
