Nintendo finally admits it’s making the Switch 2

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has officially acknowledged that Nintendo is making a Switch successor – dubbed Switch 2 by many, albeit not by Nintendo – in a release to coincide with the company’s annual financial results. Yes, we all knew the Nintendo Switch successor was coming, but Nintendo hadn’t said anything about the console prior to Furukawa’s post.

“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo,” Furukawa said in the message to X. “We will make an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will be over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. In June, we will be holding a Nintendo Direct about the Nintendo Switch software series for the second half of 2024, but please note that there was no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

Nintendo’s fiscal year ended at the end of March, so the timeline for a Switch 2 announcement would be within a year from then – before March 31, 2025. Nintendo confirmed via Furukawa’s announcement that a Nintendo Direct is planned for June, but that the company will not talk about the new console there; that event will be entirely focused on Nintendo Switch games expected in the second half of 2024.

While Nintendo has said very little about the console, news about it has been steadily leaking in recent months. The latest news is that the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers will attach with magnets instead of the original console’s sliding rails. According to some reports, the Joy-Cons will be larger and have more buttons, while the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch screen. The console is expected to be backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games and peripherals.
