Nikki Haley says Trump is turning the Republican Party into his ‘box’ and that his attempt to put leadership in place before the primaries are over is a ‘huge control move’
- Nikki Haley campaigned in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Monday
- “Trump is now turning the Republican Party into his own playpen,” she said
Nikki Haley on Monday portrayed Donald Trump as a giant toddler, saying he was turning the Republican Party into his personal “box” as he takes over the Republican National Committee.
Trump is maneuvering to install top allies in leadership roles at the RNC, including his daughter-in-law Lara Trump.
It is an unprecedented step for a candidate who has not yet become a party candidate.
“Donald Trump is now turning the Republican Party into his own playpen,” his last remaining rival told reporters ahead of a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
“Look what’s happening at the RNC. The idea that they would choose a chairman and a director before the primaries are over is a huge control move by Donald Trump.”

Michigan will hold its primaries on Tuesday and Haley is likely heading for another heavy defeat.
The Trump campaign has already indicated that it is no longer paying attention to the former governor of South Carolina and is focusing on attacking President Joe Biden.
Previously, Ronna McDaniel said she is stepping down as chair of the RNC.
That paves the way for Trump figures to take action.
Trump announced earlier this month his preference for North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley, a little-known veteran who has focused in recent years on the prospect of voter fraud, to replace McDaniel.
He also appoints his daughter-in-law as co-chair of the committee. And top campaign adviser Chris LaCivita is expected to take over as chief operating officer.
Campaigns often merge with the RNC to coordinate fundraising and spending, but not this early in the cycle.
Haley said the move showed that the RNC was now all about Trump, at the expense of holding on to the House of Representatives and winning the Senate in the November elections.
“I have decided to step aside during our spring training on March 8 in Houston so that our nominee can select a seat of his choosing,” Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
Another of Trump’s favorites is North Carolina’s Republican president, Michael Whatley
“The idea that there is a resolution within the RNC that says Donald Trump cannot use RNC for his legal slush and that he is angry that that was proposed tells you everything you need to know,” she said.
“The idea that those who are moving to the RNC now are saying the RNC is just about Donald Trump… you can hang the House of Representatives, you can hang the Senate and the rest of the ticket.”
Haley lost badly in her home state of South Carolina on Saturday and has little chance of taking the nomination from Trump.
However, she continues to claim that polls show she has a better chance of beating Biden than her rival.
And she said the early primaries showed a large portion of Republicans wanted a different candidate.
About 250 people heard Haley speak Monday afternoon in Grand Rapids
“If you have a candidate who can’t get 40 percent of the vote in early states, if you have a candidate who can’t bring in independents, if you have a candidate who drives people out of our party, then so be it. is a sinking ship that guarantees a President Kamala Harris,” she said, referring to Biden’s running mate.
The message was enough to draw about 250 supporters to a ballroom in a downtown Grand Rapids hotel.
“I’m kind of excited to see Nikki Haley,” said Bill Solomon, 49, who works in IT. “I think she offers an opportunity for change that Donald Trump and Joe Biden don’t.”
He said it was wrong to write her off anymore.
‘I think there’s a good chance that Trump won’t make it. His legal entanglements cause him to drop out. And then Nikki will be there.’
