The new Nike 'super shoes' worn by Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum to break the marathon world record sold out within minutes of going on sale.

Wearing the Alphafly 3 shoes – which Kiptum wore during the Chicago Marathon in October – the 24-year-old became the first runner to perform under two hours and one minute in an official race.

Nike finally released the shoes for public sale on Thursday morning, priced at a whopping £284.99.

However, within two minutes the entire offering on their website was sold out.

Some of those people who were lucky enough to buy a pair have since advertised the shoes for resale, with someone offering them on eBay for a price of £589 if anyone wants to 'buy it now'.

The shoes are particularly special because they are made of ultra-light materials that are reinforced with carbon in a special responsive foam.

This is designed to help runners maintain energy and propel themselves forward.

After selling out in two minutes, Nike's website said, “This product is currently out of stock.”

It is not yet clear if and when further shares will be released to the public.

Along with Kiptum's record run in Chicago, every world distance record over 5,000 meters since 2020 has been beaten in some version of super shoes or super spikes.
