Nicole Kidman broke down in tears as she paid tribute to her late parents at the 36th annual Palm Springs International Film Awards on Friday.

The actress, 57, gave an emotional speech as she accepted the International Star Award from Jamie Lee Curtis.

Nicole thanked her parents for teaching her resilience and giving her the “love and strength” she needed to move forward in life.

She accepted her award on stage at the Palm Springs Convention Center and said, “I went home for Christmas. I’ve lost both of my parents, and I’m in a place of, okay, this is different now.

“They’ve given me the resilience and they’ve given me the love and they’ve given me the strength to keep moving forward.”

Her mother Janelle tragically died just hours before she was named Best Actress for her role in Babygirl on the final day of the Venice Film Festival in September, a huge achievement.

She recalled: ‘I arrived in Venice and she was gone. I got the call. I said to Halina, ‘Can you go on stage for me?’

Her director Halina Reijn read a statement from the actor, which revealed that Nicole’s mother Janelle died at the age of 83 while in Venice.

Nicole continued, “Now I’m on stage and I’m back here. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say this is for my mother.

‘My whole career has been for my mother and my father, but they are no longer here. I want to keep working and giving to the world.

‘I’m sorry I’m crying. I didn’t want to do that, but I feel my mother now. This is for your mother.’

Nicole was born in Honolulu and raised in Sydney by her beloved mother Janelle and her father, psychologist Antony, who passed away in September 2014.

The actress has long had an incredibly close relationship with her beloved mother Janelle and has often spoken about her support and influence on her career over the years.

Nicole was forced to leave Venice Film Festival to return to her native country Sydney to be with her family after the devastating news.

“Today I arrived in Venice only to find out shortly afterwards that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed away,” she said in a statement read by director Halina after her win.

‘I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, she guided me and she made me.

“I am beyond grateful to be able to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken. We love you all.”

After spending time in the United States, the Moulin Rouge star and her younger sister Antonia, 54, spent much of their childhood in Sydney.

Nicole pursued her passion for acting when she was a teenager and was supported by both her parents as she achieved worldwide fame.

Both remained heavily involved in her career over the years, with Nicole recently admitting she would still go to her mother for advice.

In November, the Big Little Lies star opened up about how she often asked her mother Janelle for advice on her outfits, despite working with a slew of professional stylists.

In a sign of their close bond, Nicole told People, “My mom is still — she’s so involved in what I wear.”

Known for her bold fashion choices, Nicole shared how her mother and grandmother first nurtured her love of clothes.

‘I love fashion. I’ve always loved fashion,” she said while speaking at Planet Omega’s pop-up launch in New York.

“As a little girl, I grew up with a grandmother who loved fashion and could sew, and so did my mother. They liked nice clothes. They could make beautiful clothes,” she continued.

‘I saw them sewing, embroidering, knitting and crocheting. And I think when you grow up and you see the people in your household doing that, you’ll love it.”
