Nicola Sturgeon claims extraordinary internet rumors about her personal life were “part of the reason” she resigned
- She shot down claims that she owns a real estate portfolio and is a “secret lesbian.”
- Users even say she had an extramarital affair with a female diplomat
Nicola Sturgeon has claimed that extraordinary internet rumors about her personal life were “part of the reason” she stepped down as prime minister.
In the wake of her shock dismissal, Ms Sturgeon said yesterday that vicious gossip on social media had prompted her to seek more privacy.
In particular, she debunked online claims that she was the proud owner of a global real estate portfolio, but also that she was a “secret lesbian.”
In one account, users say she had an extramarital relationship with a female French diplomat. Some rumors claim that the couple bought tennis legend Judy Murray’s old house to use as a love nest.
And other wild allegations have suggested that Ms. Sturgeon is able to withhold the “truth” from the public under a court-ordered “super-injunction.”
Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday that vicious gossip on social media had prompted her to seek more privacy
But speaking on a new BBC podcast, Nicola – The Person, the former prime minister debunked the bizarre cyber theories, saying: “I read accounts of my life on social media and I think, ‘You know, it’s so much more glamorous. ” sounding and so much more exciting”.’
Asked: “Which French diplomat are you having an affair with?” she laughed and replied, “I’ll tell you off-camera which one it’s supposed to be, but whichever it is, we actually had a laugh about it.”
On a more serious note, Mrs. Sturgeon admitted that the gossip might have gotten to her.
She said it’s “maybe part of the reason” she stopped and said, “I’m not naive, I don’t think I’ll resign one day and be completely anonymous the next, I understand the reality of what I’ve done and I’ll still be in parliament, but I want to have a little more privacy, I want to have a little more anonymity and I just want to protect what people take for granted in their lives that I forgot to have.”
