Earlier this month, Nicola revealed that Sarah Harding’s death has ‘connected’ her with her Girls Aloud bandmates.

The singer tragically passed away in September 2021 after battling breast cancer for more than a year, and the band has since reunited several times to raise money for research into the disease.

Speaking on the official BRIT Awards podcast The red carpet treatment With new host Jordan Stephens, Nicola discussed some of her favorite memories with Sarah, adding that she was ‘always authentic to who she was’.

Asked whether Sarah’s death had brought Girls Aloud closer together, Nicola said: ‘I think what we went through as five was huge in itself. That bonds you in a way that you don’t really understand, even with your own siblings, 24/7.

‘Experiencing something where you have lost part of yourself is on a completely different scale. Life is so fragile. It’s vulnerable for everyone, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do.’

Reflecting on her memories of her late friend, she added: “Even going back to that British moment, how vibrant and full of life she was, speaking of authenticity, Sarah was very, very authentic in who she was.

‘Didn’t try to be someone else, never tried to reject herself and wasn’t even aware that she might have to do so in certain circumstances.

‘For example, she was always completely who she was. And that in itself is an achievement, because we are so often shaped in a certain way.

“Or, if you’re a sensitive person, you pick up on little social nuances that you probably shouldn’t say this, probably shouldn’t do that. She was always completely who she was. And that’s why I’ve always admired her.’

In 2022, Girls Aloud raised £1 million for breast cancer research. Nicola revealed the news in an Instagram post shared in December that year.

Sarah passed away on September 5, 2021, with her death confirmed by her mother Maria in a statement shared on the star’s Instagram account, saying he “slipped away peacefully” after her battle with cancer.

Her Girls Aloud bandmates Nicola, Cheryl, Nadine Coyle and Kimberley Walsh all paid tribute to her following the news of her death.

Nadine revealed last year that she thought she had received signals from Sarah, including when she was at home and ‘something flew off the shelf’.

The singer described the difficult time she went through when Sarah passed away in September 2021.

Nicola then shared her wildest memory of attending the BRIT Awards in recent years, telling Jordan: ‘Lady Gaga came running into our dressing room and screamed, ‘I need tights, I need tights!’ take what you want.”

Girls Aloud won a BRIT Award for Best British Single in 2009 for their song The Promise, and Nicola said the band celebrated in style.

‘It was very good. We performed and won. So it felt like it was a big night for us, and actually for our team.

‘That was seven years later, so even though we had been nominated for best group or pop act before, it just felt like it was always intangible.

‘It was really bad that night. So it was like, OK, finally we’ve been somewhat recognized by this fantastic establishment.

‘I was extremely nervous. But you know, the sickest part was we woke up the next day and we were on the front of the paper. It was Bono who said I wanted to be in Girls Aloud.”
