The 33-year-old Canberra man was fined $2,500 by the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two charges of trespassing and three charges of property damage.

Magistrate James Lawton did not give him time to pay the fines, meaning they will eventually be repaid through a prison sentence.

The man, who has already spent more than 10 months in prison and cannot be named for legal reasons, is currently awaiting sentencing in the High Court after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery.

That charge relates to an incident in which he threatened Kyrgios’ mother at gunpoint last year to steal the tennis star’s Tesla Model X.

Court documents show that the tennis star’s mother knocked on her door around 8:30 a.m. on May 1, 2023.

She was confronted by a man holding a “long barrel” gun and demanding the keys to the Tesla parked outside before driving away.

Nick Kyrgios, who was staying at the house, and his manager called police and later used the Tesla app on his phone to track the car.

The court heard the man had committed a further series of offenses around six weeks before the robbery, the court was told Daily telegram.

Court documents show he entered a property in Ainslie, north Canberra, and climbed onto the roof of a shed before jumping onto the roof of another house.

A resident of the home was given a ladder to help the perpetrator off the roof when the 33-year-old pulled out part of an air conditioning unit and caused water to pour out.

He then jumped off the roof and landed in a tree, where he started playing with a pink bracelet, a telephone line and the water pipe he had pulled from the air conditioning.

After a while he jumped onto a garden shed, which suffered damage.

It is understood that police only caught up with the perpetrator when he was arrested for the robbery of Kyrgios’ car.

Lawyer Jan De Bruin told the court that the perpetrator indicated that he had a psychotic episode because he thought someone was chasing him.

The prosecutor argued that the rooftop incident had caused ‘significant alarm’ to people living in the area.

Passing sentence, Mr Lawton described the Ainslie incident as ‘very bizarre’ and said it was ‘clearly linked to (the offender) having problems with his drug use’.

He referred to the perpetrator’s “long and checkered history”, including previous prison sentences for the 2005 murder of university student Clea Rose.

He will be sentenced for the robbery of Kyrgios’ car at a later date after an assessment of his eligibility for drug and alcohol treatment.
