‘Devastated’ Nick Kyrgios sensationally pulls out of Australian Open with knee injury just a day before his first round match

  • Shocking news comes after Australian star originally had ankle issues
  • Star has a lateral meniscus tear and a cyst in the joint, an MRI revealed

Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Australian Open with a knee injury just one day before playing his first round match against Roman Safiullin.

The 27-year-old was Australia’s best chance of winning a Grand Slam title and was originally battling an ankle injury that prevented him from competing in any of the warm-up tournaments before play began at Melbourne Park.

A routine MRI performed after Kyrgios suffered joint discomfort revealed he has a lateral meniscus tear and a cyst, his physical therapist Will Maher revealed.

The great Australian hope said he is devastated to have to withdraw from his home Grand Slam.

The injury is not serious enough to put his career in jeopardy.

The star said he was heartbroken to have to pull out of the home Grand Slam, where many called it a better chance than he had at Wimbledon, where he lost the final to Novak Djokovic last year.

“I’m devastated, obviously,” he told a news conference just after the news broke on Monday afternoon.

‘It’s my home tournament… it’s brutal. Evidently a mixture of emotions… such is life. It is part of the sport.

“I have no doubt that I will return to my full strength.”
