Nick Kyrgios tells Piers Morgan that he would have easily beaten John McEnroe – and sends heartfelt plea to Andy Murray to retire soon

Australian fanatic Nick Kyrgios believes he could have easily beaten tennis legend John McEnroe. He hopes his good friend Andy Murray puts his health first and retires soon.

The bad boy of world tennis appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored this week, sharing his views on a wide range of topics in the run-up to Wimbledon.

When asked if he would beat American tennis legend McEnroe if they ever met on court, Kyrgios didn’t have to think long.

“He’s lucky he hasn’t played during this time because I don’t know how that would have turned out for that big boy,” he said.

‘He probably overreacted to people on social media!’

When asked about the outcome of the match, he continued: ‘That’s a piece of cake for me.’

Morgan replied, “Really, you would have beaten him?”

Kyrgios replied: ‘I think so… I serve quite hard.’

‘I mean, it’s a different era… I mean, [Roger] Federer, [Rafael] Nadal and Novak [Djokovic] have struggled. So I don’t know how McEnroe is going to do against returning my service.

“I have confidence in my ability and I have the utmost respect. It would be a tough match… I think I will return the service.”

Kyrgios also urged his friend Andy Murray to put his health first and retire from tennis as soon as possible.

The 37-year-old player is currently unsure whether he is physically fit enough to play his first round match at Wimbledon against Czech Tomas Machac, following recent surgery.

“It hurts me to see him…and these are not minor injuries,” Kyrgios said.

‘These are injuries that can really have consequences for your life and the future of your family.

‘So, for me, this should be his last Wimbledon. He’s achieved everything you can achieve.’

Morgan explained that Murray may be afraid of retirement.

“I’m here to talk to Piers Morgan. I grew up in Canberra and there are so many great things happening in my life, not just in tennis,” Kyrgios said.

‘He has a beautiful family and so many other wonderful things in his life to enjoy.

‘I could be here playing dominoes with you and I’d get a rush of competition. There’s competition everywhere.

“It’s how you look at it…tennis for me, I don’t identify as a tennis player. It’s just a way of communicating. I have a podcast, I have tennis, I have so many other things. They’re just ways that I communicate with the world.

“When you look at it that way, maybe Andy needs to figure out how to communicate. I think he’s afraid to let go because he thinks that’s all he is, but you have a great family, you’re a good person.

“He can do whatever he wants, but it will be difficult for him to let go of tennis. But I think he will be fine.”
