Nick Kyrgios has announced he wants to swap the tennis court for the boxing ring when his playing career is over, with the Australian promising to ‘call a few people up’.

The Wimbledon men’s singles finalist has played just one match on the ATP Tour since October 2022, with serious injuries to his knee and wrist keeping him sidelined for a long time.

The 29-year-old has indicated that his recovery is going well and that he will soon be back on the court with ‘fire in his belly’.

On Monday evening, Kyrgios held a Q&A on his Instagram page and answered several questions from fans.

A fan asked the former world number 13 if he wanted to do a boxing fight and Kyrgios replied that he was very interested in the idea.

“Yes, I would, at the end of my tennis career,” Kyrgios said.

“There are a few people I would call.”

A fan then asked him if he wanted to take on broadcaster Piers Morgan, who he has clashed with in the past.

“No, we’re friends now!” said the Australian.

Kyrgios’ divisive antics would make any boxing match with him a real money spinner for promoters. One person he might want to call on is former arch-rival Bernard Tomic, who challenged him to a boxing match in 2022.

Tomic said he wanted to settle the long-running grudge between the couple with a tennis match – either on the basketball court or in a boxing ring.

“First and foremost, let’s set the record straight,” Tomic said in a video.

Kyrgios had a public war of words with Bernard Tomic (pictured left) in 2022 where the idea of a boxing fight between them was discussed

“Our current score is 1-0, I’ve already beaten you once, I’ll beat you again whenever you want. I dominate you every time we play, train, and you know it.

“If you say you’re good at basketball, I’ll beat you at that too.

‘Tennis? I will dominate you one-on-one. To make no excuses, I’ll even play you on grass whenever you want.

‘You know what? Let’s settle this in the boxing ring. Put on your gloves, I’ll dominate you there too. Let’s see who’s better once and for all.’

Kyrgios responded by saying that Tomic must first get back into shape on the tennis court, but he did leave the door open for a possible boxing match at the end of his career.

“Maybe, my brother, we can do that later when my career comes to an end,” Kyrgios said.

‘But I’m too busy at the moment, man, preparing for tournaments like Wimbledon and stuff. I hope all is well, let’s put this to bed. I’ll give you a verse when I give you a verse, if you can go back to the beginning and to the main tour.

“But for now, I think you have some bigger challenges ahead of you in life, brother, so good luck.”
