Expert makes stunning claim that Nick Kyrgios is more talented than Roger Federer – and can become world No.1

With his singles career seemingly coming to an end, Nick Kyrgios is being urged to stay on the ATP tour amid predictions he could become the best doubles player in the world.

A dejected Kyrgios admitted he may have played his last Australian Open singles match after injury conspired against him again in a straight sets first round loss to Scot Jacob Fearnley at Melbourne Park.

The 29-year-old part-timer plans to play singles at the remaining Grand Slams in 2025, with the ATP confirming Kyrgios has seven more tournaments until November to use his injury-protected ranking of world No. 21 to gain direct entry to get.

But leading American doubles analyst Will Boucek is pleading with Kyrgios to channel his energy and talent elsewhere.

“I really believe that if he focuses on doubles, he has the skills to potentially become the best doubles player in the world,” Boucek said.

‘There are a few things that make him particularly good in doubles.

“He can take returns very early so he can step forward and use a kind of SABR (Sneak Attack By Roger) return, and what that does is it completely neutralizes the opponent’s net player.

‘So the ball goes very quickly past the server’s partner and back to the server. He can also spin and volley with it.’

As an ATP and WTA doubles strategy analyst who has worked with top-10 teams at the US Open, Wimbledon, Roland Garros, the Australian Open, the WTA Finals and the Olympic Games, Boucek also considers Kyrgios to be more naturally talented than Roger Federer .

“He has everything going for him and would certainly be second to none with his skills,” he added.

‘Potentially his ball skills are among the best of all time, and his serve is obviously huge, which will make it easy.

“He’s tall, so he has a long reach, so he’s good in the net for his partner and can cover a lot of area.

“So I definitely think he could be one of the best, if not the best, doubles players in the world if he wants to focus on that.”

Being a doubles grand slam contender could also help Kyrgios, the great showman, stay the center of attention, Boucek thinks, while prolonging his career.

Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the 2022 Australian Open doubles title and are teaming up again this year.

Boucek is confident that the Special Ks can be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

“Having a partner would also help Nick concentrate and play better,” he said.

“In singles, historically, for me, it was like he was very afraid of trying and not losing, so he would rather just not try.

“I think that mentality goes away because he has a partner, also a partner, that he wants to try it for.”

Three rounds of wrist and knee surgery have sidelined the former world number 13 and 2022 Wimbledon finalist for almost two and a half years.

“That’s one of the things about doubles: you can last a lot longer in your career,” Boucek said.

‘We see it now that ‘Boo’ (Rohan Bopanna) won the Australian Open last year at the age of 43 (with Australian Matt Ebden).

“Rajeev Ram is forty now. (Paris Olympic Games gold medalist) Ebden is probably not that close to retirement and he is 37.

“So yeah, a lot of the best doubles players are a bit older because you only have to cover part of the court.

“It’s definitely easier on the body.”
