Nick Knowles, 61, pokes fun at his ‘overweight’ appearance after viewers branded him ‘unrecognisable’: ‘If I lay down on the beach, Greenpeace would drag me into the sea!’
Nick Knowles has dismissed viewers’ surprising reactions to his ‘unrecognizable’ new look by admitting he is ‘a little overweight’ compared to other ‘super fit stars’.
The DIY SOS star, 61, shows his adventurous side in a new travel series, following the route of the mighty Mississippi River.
And in a new interview with The mirrorNick admitted it’s ‘not a big surprise’ that his appearance has changed after reaching his 60s.
He said: ‘There are a lot of people making adventure programs and a lot of them, like Bear Grylls, are young and super fit.
‘I’m now 61 and it’s no big surprise that I’m a little overweight. Even putting on a wetsuit and appearing on TV… you don’t have to worry.”

Nick jokingly added, “If I lay down on a beach, Greenpeace would try to drag me back into the water.”
In the interview, Nick added that he vowed to embrace a more adventurous lifestyle while filming a show in Patagonia.
He said: ‘I met a guy who cycled from Mexico to the bottle of Argentina. He said to me, ‘You shouldn’t have to wait for a terminal diagnosis to get the best out of your life.’ You will be amazed at what you are capable of when you push yourself. You don’t have to worry about how you look or how you’re going to fail.”
The star previously wowed viewers with a radical new look when he appeared on The One Show to promote his new Channel 5 show.
Host Alex Jones said: ‘There’s an elephant in the room here. Nobody’s talking about it. There’s a new look, Nick, it’s going well.’
Announcer Nick explained that he had been working on a number of writing projects and had been off camera, and so was free to grow his facial hair as he pleased.
He explained, “I haven’t been filming for a while. I’m doing some writing and stuff, and so I got the chance to grow a beard… I can’t have a beard like that when I’m filming.”
Viewers took to social media after seeing a bearded Nick on TV, with one person writing on Twitter: ‘What happened to Nick Knowles, he’s unrecognisable.’

Someone else said: ‘If I hadn’t heard his voice I’m not sure I would have recognized the man as Nick Knowles. He looked completely different and not just the beard.”
“Nick Knowles is completely unrecognizable,” another viewer wrote, while someone else asked: “What the hell happened to Nick Knowles?”
“Nick Knowles. What a transformation,” said another viewer.
While someone else commented: ‘I didn’t recognize Nick Knowles.’
Some viewers were impressed with Nick’s appearance, with one person writing: ‘Nick Knowles looks incredibly good at 62. So what if he puts on some weight and grows a beard? At least he didn’t fill his face with botox.’
While someone else insisted: ‘Loving Nick Knowles’ new beard look.’
“Nick Knowles is trending, and let’s be honest, he looks really good, approaching 62 years old,” another viewer wrote.

On Monday, Nick was branded ‘unrecognizable’ by viewers as he showed off his new look, with the star admitting he had taken advantage of a break from his presenting work.
Nick and his fiancée Katie Dadzie looked loved up as they posed for loved-up snaps on the red carpet at the 2024 TV Choice Awards earlier this month.
Nick shared the happy news of his engagement last summer on Instagram.
Sex toy company owner Katie, who is 27 years Nick’s junior, looked delighted in a series of photos, which saw Nick propose while down on one knee.
Another photo saw her grinning from ear to ear as she showed off the ring Nick gave her, which was actually a gummy candy.
