NHL legend Jaromir Jagr, 52, announces plans to finally retire from professional hockey

Jaromir Jagr, 52, is retiring from professional hockey for good.

The former Pittsburgh Penguins star now plays again in the Czech Republic for the Kladno Knights, which he also owns.

And after writing on his Instagram page earlier this week that this would be his “final season,” Jagr confirmed The Athletics that that was the case.

Jagr last played in the NHL during the 2017-18 season, playing 22 games for the Calgary Flames.

He played the first 11 seasons of his career with the Penguins, after which he played for the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals and more.

Jaromir Jagr has confirmed that his 37th season as a professional hockey player will be his last

He returned to Pittsburgh in February when the Penguins retired his jersey number (68).

Jagr has won the Hart Award five times, which is given to the player who has scored the most points in the league at the end of the season and has the second-most points in NHL history.

Jagr began his 37th professional season on Wednesday.

The 52-year-old initiated a powerplay goal, the only one Kladno scored in the 5-1 away defeat to Pardubice.

It was the first time Jagr played a season opener since the Flames fired him.

He played for Pardubice despite not being fully fit due to a muscle injury, which forced him to interrupt his pre-season preparation for four weeks.

Jagr said he needed more games to get back to his best.

“That’s fine, it was the first match,” he told local media.
