N’Golo Kante has hinted that he will sign a new contract with Chelsea and would like to play a part in their “exciting project”.

The 31-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, prompting interest from top European clubs including Barcelona and Arsenal.

The defensive midfielder is expected to sign a two-year contract until 2025, with Chelsea having an option to extend the contract for a further year.

Kante has been a vital part of Chelsea’s first team since joining Leicester for £32m in 2016.

He has so far helped the Blues to a Premier League title and Champions League trophy during his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

Asked if he wanted to stay at Chelsea, Kante said Sky Sports: ‘Certainly. It is an exciting project for the club.

“Unfortunately, this season has not been to Chelsea’s standards. But everyone wants to go this way, the way of success and winning titles.

“I hope this club will fight in this direction again. Let’s see where I stand, but I hope this is a change for the club, that’s the most important thing.”

Kante has recently returned to action for Chelsea after a long spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

On his injury, Kante added: “The goal of the operation was to come back strong. At the moment I feel good, hopefully it stays that way. The last few weeks I’ve been playing, I’ve been feeling really good.

“I hope I can carry on for the rest of the season and hopefully I’ll get past the hardest part and forget about it – enjoy football again, enjoy victories again and hopefully more success.”

He played a total of 269 games for The Blues and scored 13 goals.
