N’Golo Kante’s relapse is not as serious as France and Chelsea first feared, and it is hoped the midfielder returns in time for next month’s World Cup in Qatar.

Kante, who first suffered his hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham in August, is steadily building fitness during training in Cobham in a bid to return for the big tournament.

But the 31-year-old has since sustained an aggravation of the injury, raising doubts about his availability for Didier Deschamps’ roster in three weeks’ time.

Despite the setback, Sports post understands that the midfielder will likely miss another two weeks of action at Chelsea.

Graham Potter must navigate an overcrowded series of games over the next two weeks, with Chelsea taking on Aston Villa, Brentford, Manchester United, RB Salzburg and Brighton over the next 14 days.

To avoid a further setback, Kante is expected to return either against former Potter club at Amex or during Chelsea’s next match against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on November 2.

With the exception of the Blues star, France has a plethora of additional injury issues ahead of their World Cup defense in Qatar next month.

Paul Pogba is yet to play for Juventus this season due to his long-term meniscus injury, and defenders Lucas Hernandez, Lucas Digne and Presnel Kimpembe also remain in doubt for the tournament.

Both Pogba and Kimpembe are expected to return by the end of the month.
