NFL warns players that burglary gangs posing as joggers are targeting homes

The NFL issued a security alert to teams and the players’ union on Thursday following recent burglaries at the homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

In a memo obtained by the Associated Press, the league said homes of professional athletes in multiple sports “have increasingly become targets for burglaries by organized and expert groups.”

Law enforcement officials noted that these groups targeted homes on days when athletes have competitions. Players were told to take precautions and take safety measures to reduce the risk of being attacked.

Some burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance of the targets, including attempting home deliveries and posing as grounds maintenance or neighborhood joggers.

Burglars have entered through side doors, balconies or second floor windows. They target homes in remote areas and focus on large bedrooms and closet areas.

Players were warned not to update social media with check-ins or daily activities until the end of the day. Posting expensive items on social media is not recommended.

Last month, Mahomes and Kelce’s homes were burglarized within days of each other. The burglaries occurred just before and on the day of Kansas City’s home win over the New Orleans Saints. No injuries were reported in either case.
