NFL referees ripped by fans over controversial hit on New England Patriots QB Drake Maye
NFL referees were mobbed by fans Sunday afternoon after a hit on New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
Maye left the Patriots’ win over the New York Jets due to a concussion after taking a blow to the head.
He was hit on the back of the head when he slid into Foxborough. He was listed as doubtful to return and was replaced by Jacoby Brissett. Brissett would lead the Patriots (2-6) to a 25-20 victory, snapping the team’s six-game losing streak.
The hit was somewhat controversial, as Maye began to slide when Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood made helmet-to-helmet contact with the Patriots quarterback – a clear violation of NFL rules.
However, no penalty was imposed, prompting reactions from angry football fans on social media.

“I am no longer surprised by the NFL’s clumsy handling of these situations,” one fan told X, formerly known as Social Media.
“The NFL staff needs to be revamped and repaired,” one fan wrote on beaten. ‘
“Terrible referee,” claimed another, before a third added: “Refs are bad across the league this year.”
Meanwhile, others accused the referees of failing to spot a potential penalty, with one writing: ‘the referees are blind this game’, while another agreed, saying: ‘The referees are so BLIND this year.’
‘Completely unnecessary, in my opinion. He was sliding. Dirty play,” chimed in another social media user.
Meanwhile, other NFL fans seemed to point to favoritism within the league, suggesting the calls were more in favor of some teams than the offers.
“The refs never call anything for the Patriots, they always side with the Chiefs… I think it’s clear these refs want Mahomes to outscore Tom Brady,” one fan claimed, referring to the Maye -incident.
“If a defenseman had done that to Mahomes, he would have been sent to solitary confinement,” another echoed.
The lack of a flag on the stretch led to reactions from angry football fans on social media
Earlier in the game, Maye, the first-round pick out of North Carolina, rushed for a 17-yard touchdown — his first score of his young career.
Maye had some success in his third NFL start.
He completed just 3 of 6 passes thanks to two key drops by Patriots receivers, but Maye made up for that by running three times for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Maye has been impressive since becoming the Patriots’ starter two games earlier, though he is still looking for his first win.
After completing 4 of 8 passes in relief of Brissett in a loss to the Jets on September 19, Maye has completed 49 of 76 passes for 742 yards, five touchdowns and two picks.
