NFL quarterback’s long-term fate revealed after being ruled out of Sunday showdown

The San Francisco 49ers believe Brock Purdy will return for their big game against the Buffalo Bills next Sunday.

The quarterback is out of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers due to shoulder soreness as the 49ers, who are 5-5, fight to make the postseason.

They face the Packers who are in second place in the NFC West behind the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams, meaning Purdy’s absence comes at a terrible time for last season’s Super Bowl runner-up.

According to Adam Schefter As of Sunday morning, San Francisco believes Purdy will return next week and there is “no major concern.”

That said, Schefter added that the 49ers also expected Purdy to play against the Packers and that’s not the case now, so it’s clearly a fluid situation.

Purdy is expected to be re-evaluated on Monday and the 49ers are also in the running to sign Daniel Jones following his release from the New York Giants on Friday.

The 49ers face the Buffalo Bills next week, meaning Purdy’s potential return would be a huge boost.

Kyle Shanahan’s team will also be without defensive end Nick Bosa on Sunday against Green Bay due to a left hip problem.

“We’re definitely missing two good players,” Shanahan said. ‘But we have a lot of good players.

‘We have absolutely no chance of winning. We are going to do our utmost and expect this to be a very good match.’

Brandon Allen will start in Purdy’s place against the Packers, who are 7-3.

“The circumstances are what they are, but I think our team has been dealing with injuries here and there all year, and there has been a big next-man-up mentality,” Allen said of replacing Purdy.

“So it’s definitely an opportunity for me to play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game.”
