NFL fans react to Rob Gronkowski portrayal in ‘cringey’ Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story TV show
- Aaron Hernandez became a convicted murderer after playing in the NFL
- He died by suicide from prison at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in 2017
NFL fans are in disbelief over the new TV show documenting Aaron Hernandez’s time with the New England Patriots.
“Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story” debuted last month on FX and charts the life of the late football player turned convicted murderer.
But viewers have had negative reactions to the program, especially after a recent scene depicting Hernandez and his ex-Patriots teammate (and fellow tight end) Rob Gronkowski in the locker room.
In the scene, Gronkowski hilariously informs his new teammate that “they call me Gronk” before excitedly punching Hernandez in the chest before practice.
Fans also criticized the fact that Hernandez’s actor bore little resemblance to the real player.

“This is why sports biopics never work. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that they cast a 6-foot-2 chubby guy as Aaron Hernandez,” said a fan on X.
“How low was the budget for this thing?” another added.
“This show looks so cringe, but this guy has a good grunt.”
Others agreed with the second part of that assessment of the famed tight end.
“This is the best grunk I’ve ever seen,” said one.
Hernandez will appear in Attleboro District Court in Attleboro, Massachusetts on Wednesday, July 24, 2013
“The guy who plays Gronk is faking it, while everyone else is sending it up.
An earlier scene featuring an image of legendary Patriots coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft was also widely mocked after making the rounds on X.
There will be a total of 10 episodes of the limited series.
