The NFL announced Thursday that the Black national anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” will be performed by singer Andra Day ahead of this year’s Super Bowl.

The song, which was dubbed the “Negro National Anthem” by the NAACP in 1919, references slavery and the hope for liberation.

It was later adopted as a rallying cry during the civil rights movement NAACP.

The song was first played before NFL games in 2021, and was also performed during the last two Super Bowls.

Day acknowledged the news on her X account.
