Newsom’s reparations board wants EVERY African American in US to get at least $223k
>
A task force created by California Governor Gavin Newsom is urging the federal government to pay all African Americans in the US at least $223,000 for “housing discrimination” while continuing to investigate other areas to obtain a compensation.
The group of nine believes that African-Americans should receive the money for “bearing the economic effects” of racism and slavery, after initially making the suggestions in California.
It was created by legislation Newsom signed in 2020 and is the largest repair effort in recent history.
California is the first state to require agencies to submit a separate demographic category for descendants of enslaved people.
On Thursday, the New York Times reported that the task force has spent months traveling up and down the West Coast to learn the effect of the policies.
In a March 2022 report, those eligible for reparations would have to be descendants of enslaved African-Americans or a “free black person who lived in the United States before the end of the 19th century.”

Kamilah Moore, a member of the group, has told the federal government that they are not “out of the woods” in light of their findings.
They argue the money is for discriminatory housing practices used from 1933 to 1977, and they have 12 more categories to consider.
Panel members are calling for the federal government to address their concerns, a move that could cost billions of dollars.
Kamilah Moore, a member of the group, told KCRA 3: “For the federal government, what I want to make clear is that while California is making history by repairing the damage done to its African-American community, that doesn’t leave the federal government out.” . the hook.
‘And reparations for African Americans or the freed American community is first and foremost a federal responsibility.
“So I hope this report is used not only as an educational tool, but also as an organizing tool that is leveraged for executive action at the federal level.”
Discussions are still ongoing, with the panel continuing to consider how the payments should be made: some suggested tuition and housing grants, while others proposed cash.

People who lived in Russell City told the task force how it was demolished to make way for an industrial plant and residents were not properly reimbursed.
He has until June 2023 to submit his final recommendations to the Legislature.
Several black communities were purchased or seized through eminent domain to be demolished for infrastructure projects, according to the panel’s findings.
The group also advises that the government pay compensation for racial terror, stolen culture, unequal education, housing segregation, stolen work and climate change.
California has approximately 2.6 million black residents, of whom 2 million are descendants of slaves and therefore eligible for relief.
Newsom, who is believed to be considering throwing his hat in the ring for a presidential election, would see his state lose around $569 billion in compensation.
That’s more than California’s $512.8 billion spending in 2021, which included funds for schools, hospitals, universities, highways, policing and corrections.

“We’re looking at repairs on a scale that’s the largest since Reconstruction,” task force member Jovan Scott Lewis, a Berkeley professor, told the Times.
Any amount for other subsections has yet to be decided, and Jovan Scott Lewis, another member of the group, added: “We are looking at repairs on a scale that is the largest since Reconstruction.”
Speaking about how the additional chapters have been affected, Moore added: “In each chapter, there is a state breakdown that talks about the responsibility of the state of California to perpetuate harm against the African-American community.”
“And then, in each chapter, there is also a national breakdown that clearly demonstrates the responsibility of the federal government in perpetuating the harm against the African American community.
‘And in this report, we also have some preliminary recommendations as our final report is not due before the Legislature until July of next year.
But yes, there are some preliminary recommendations that people can learn about, advocate for, and the state Legislature can even start to act on now.’
The task force hopes to narrow the wealth gap between black and white Californians.
Nationwide, black households have a median wealth of $24,100, which pales in comparison to white households, where median wealth is $188,200, according to the Federal Reserve Board’s most recent Survey of Consumer Finances.
