The homeowner opened fire early Tuesday morning when the two men stormed the $5 million, 4,709-square-foot property while his family slept.

Heavily armed police arrived at the gated community near Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road after a 911 call at 4:45 a.m. to find one suspect dead and another armed with a gun bleeding in the middle of the street.

The deceased intruder was bizarrely found with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head” after fleeing the home, police said.

His accomplice was discovered in nearby bushes and pronounced dead at the scene.

The four people in the home “were evacuated safely and were not injured.”

“I want to assure the Newport Beach community, the residents, that this is a safe community and that the Newport Beach Police Department is doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the community.”

The home’s previous owners, Belle Tatsing and Sally Tatsing, told DailyMail.com they were shocked to see their old home on the news.

Belle said it is “unusual” for burglaries and home invasions to occur in the safe and affluent community.

“It certainly wasn’t a random invasion,” Belle said.
