Newmarket residents in disbelief after Brisbane City Council erected a baffling sign about noise levels at Spencer Park kids’ playground

Residents have criticized strange signage installed by a council on a local playground, labeling it as ‘stupid’.

The sign, recently installed in Spencer Park in Newmarket, asks visitors to be mindful of their noise.

“Users are asked to be aware of the noise levels and disruption caused by the use of this facility,” the sign reads.

Parents were in disbelief at the post after a photo of it was shared on Facebook, arguing it was baffling to expect young children to play quietly.

The sign was shared to a local Facebook community group, with many local parents branding it ‘stupid’

“I consider it a community joke, so stupid,” one local resident wrote.

‘Are three-year-olds reading this and being held accountable? Lots of sadness,” said another.

‘The construction, lawn mowers and traffic noise are fine. Children are not allowed to laugh or have fun, even if there is a playground,” said a third.

However, one resident was pleased with the addition and wrote: ‘Have you ever heard children screaming at seven o’clock on a Sunday?’

“I’d much rather have a child laughing happily at seven in the morning than roadworks taking place at eleven at night,” said another slyly.

The Spencer Park playground recently moved to the corner of Edmondstone Street and Vivienne Street in Brisbane’s northwest

The signage was installed ‘without consultation’ with local councilor Andrew Wines, who on Thursday ‘called for its immediate removal’

Noise is “part of life in the city,” many agreed.

This is what a municipal spokesperson said Yahoo News the sign “was installed by a municipal official following a complaint from a resident.”

It happened ‘without consultation’ with local councilor Andrew Wines, who on Thursday ‘asked for its immediate removal’.

The ‘popular multi-use recreational space’ was recently relocated from Parker Street to near the corner of Edmondstone Street and Vivienne Street in Brisbane’s northwest.

It received upgrades such as a modern play tower, modern play equipment and a shade sail.

Councilor Wines and Brisbane City Council have been contacted for comment.
