A newlyweds’ special night took an unexpected turn when they were robbed after their wedding party at a castle in Rio de Janeiro.

Jheinifer Borges and her husband Caio Raposo were returning to their home in Rio de Janeiro around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday when they were intercepted by four gunmen in a car on a highway in the city of Magé.

The newlyweds told Brazilian news portal G1 that the attackers forced them and four family members, including a child, to lie down on the side of the road.

The carjackers then fled in Borges’ Fiat pickup, which she had bought in September as a birthday present for herself.

“We didn’t have a wedding night and we don’t know if we’re honeymooning,” Borges said.

“The spell is gone,” she continued. “We didn’t expect to be in debt after a wedding we had planned for so long.”

The carjackers took at least $4,000 in property, including cell phones, souvenirs, and clothing they rented for the wedding.

Also missing is the wedding guest book, which Borges begs to get back.

The couple spent nearly three hours at a local police station filing a report.

Borges said she is not sure if they can celebrate their honeymoon in the mountain village of Gramado.

“Everyone has been saved. We have to thank for the good part,’ she said. “Despite what happened, everyone is here, and no one has gone to a wake.”
