Newcastle players celebrated their FA Cup victory over Sunderland by taking a team photo in front of traveling fans at the Stadium of Light.

Controversy surrounded the first Tyne-Wear derby in almost eight years, with the last meeting between the two teams ending in a 1-1 draw at St James' Park in 2016.

While much has changed since that match, the rivalry between the North East's two most storied clubs remains as emotionally charged as ever.

Eddie Howe went into Saturday's match under considerable pressure after his side's early season promise gave way to a dismal period in which they lost six of their last seven games in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Sunderland boss Michael Beale wasted no time in illustrating the competition that remains between the two clubs, claiming Sunderland are as big a club as their Premier League rivals.

Despite all the pre-match preparation and anticipation, Newcastle ultimately emerged as comfortable winners at the Stadium of Light, with the gulf between the teams evident from the start.

Black Cats defender Daniel Ballard put the ball in his own net before a second-half brace from Alexander Isak put the result beyond doubt and left bragging rights safely in the hands of the traveling fans.

With progression to the fourth round of the FA Cup secured, Newcastle marked the moment with a celebratory photo that saw the visiting Newcastle supporters in the background holding up their black and white scarves.

Dan Burn hailed his side's victory as a potential catalyst that could see them continue in the competition

Speaking on the occasion of the game boyhood, Magpies fan Dan Burn noted how special the win felt and added that the team believes they have what it takes to make it all the way in the competition this season.

'Yes, special. Obviously I think there has been a lot of build-up to the match. We more or less came out with a win and a clean sheet, we're very happy.” Burn told ITV Sport.

“We've talked about the last two seasons, we want to win something. It's been so long since we brought a trophy back to the club.

“So yeah, if we can progress in the FA Cup and get to the final and win, that would be great.”
