Newcastle open talks with Crystal Palace over the signing of England international Marc Guehi

  • The 24-year-old’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in the summer of 2026
  • Defender has been linked with a move to a top European club in recent seasons

Newcastle are in direct talks with Crystal Palace over the arrival of England international Marc Guehi.

Mail Sport understands that sporting director Paul Mitchell is leading the negotiations from Newcastle in what could be the club’s biggest deal of the summer.

Eagles co-owner Steve Parish is likely to take charge of the deal from a Palace perspective.

Guehi has just two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park and is open to a move this summer for the right project.

Newcastle have reportedly made an initial verbal offer, but there has been no confirmation yet on how much the Magpies are willing to pay during initial negotiations.

The centre-back emerged as one of England’s stars last summer as the national team reached the final of Euro 2024.

Several top clubs have shown interest in Guehi, but Newcastle are the first to make a definitive move.

Manchester City are also watching closely, but it is understood the champions want to sell before confirming their interest.

Mail Sport reported earlier this summer that Palace were considering as much as £65m for Guehi and that his valuation could still prove problematic.

If Newcastle and Palace reach an agreement, Guehi will decide whether he wants to move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle have added Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos to their squad this summer, while the loan of Lewis Hall has been made permanent and they have also agreed a deal to sign William Osula from Sheffield United.

The Magpies came close to expanding their defence earlier this summer when Joe Gomez was involved in negotiations between them and Liverpool over the signing of Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Gomez began after they approached Liverpool in early June asking whether the Anfield club would be interested in signing Anthony Gordon or Alexander Isak for PSR purposes.

The initial £100million price tag was rejected by Liverpool and then, as Mail Sport exclusively revealed, Newcastle enquired about Quansah. That request was rejected, but Newcastle subsequently proposed a price of around £80million for Gordon.

That proposal was also rejected, but as Amanda Staveley and the Newcastle owners pushed for PSR solutions, sources at Mail Sport revealed that chief executive Darren Eales returned with a proposal to buy Gomez for £45m and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m.

Palace have meanwhile already strengthened their defence with the arrival of Chadi Radi from Real Betis ahead of Oliver Glasner’s first full season in south London.
