Newcastle appear to be ‘preparing a new contract for Bruno Guimaraes’ just days after sporting director Dan Ashworth hinted he may have to leave due to Real Madrid interest.

The Brazilian has been a key player for Newcastle since his arrival in January and was recently described by Sportsmail’s Craig Hope as possibly the ‘most talented midfielder’ in the club’s history.

He has scored seven goals in 23 Premier League games over the past two seasons and brought an excellent pace of work to the Magpies.

Leading up to Newcastle’s game against Manchester United on Sunday, manager Eddie Howe said of Guimaraes: “We really want Bruno to be happy here, enjoy his football and see a long-term vision.”

‘We want to build a team. We’re still in the early stages of that, so we don’t want to disrupt the group we have, we want to add quality – that’s the goal.

“But Bruno has done an incredible job. He fitted in so well and embodied the team spirit and drive we need to be successful.”

Fabrizio Romano tweeted shortly afterwards that he believed Newcastle would offer the 24-year-old a new deal.

This appears to be a quick change of direction after Ashworth hinted earlier this week that players like Guimaraes may have to leave the club.

The sporting director said the midfielder is “a top player and a very important part of the journey”, but has further doubted his future after rumors of talks with Real.

He said: “You’re never in control when a club or an opportunity presents itself for a player who might have an ambition they’ve always wanted to do.

“Maybe it’s a certain city in the world, maybe a club or a country.

“I can’t lie and say we never have to sell a player and we can always keep our top talent.”
