Newcastle are said to have held talks with Eddie Howe over his future at the club amid speculation he will succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.
After Southgate stepped down following the Three Lions’ defeat in the 2024 European Championship final, Howe quickly emerged as the favourite to fill the vacant position according to bookmakers.
The 46-year-old added fuel to the fire last week when he expressed concerns about his ability to remain at St James’ Park following a change in the club’s management structure this summer.
Howe stressed he was keen to stay at Newcastle but added he had to be ‘free to operate in the way he wanted’ to remain at the helm.
According to a report by The TelegraphHowe’s comments concerned club leaders and led to a meeting to clarify his position within the club.

The talks are said to be led by club director Darren Eales, who has assured he will remain a key figure in the Magpies’ transfer policy following the recent recruitment of sporting director Paul Mitchell.
Howe has also been promised support in the transfer market, despite narrowly missing out on European football last season.
The talks, which were intended to clear the air, have reportedly calmed Howe down and the club are confident he will stay on for the coming campaign despite ongoing speculation surrounding the English club.
There has also been talk of a departure for England international Kieran Trippier, who is reportedly leaving the club due to interest from Saudi Arabia.
Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson could all also leave this summer.
After enjoying success during two spells at Bournemouth, Howe replaced Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager in November 2021, just weeks after the Saudi Public Investment Fund took over the club.
Potential exits are also said to have been discussed, with a number of players, including Kieran Trippier, expected to leave this summer
In his first full season as manager, Howe led Newcastle to fourth place in the Premier League, securing their first Champions League title in 20 years.
The Magpies were in a group of death that also included Borussia Dortmund, PSG and AC Milan. They were eliminated in the group stage last season, but not before a memorable 4-1 win over the French champions at St James’ Park.
